June Blog - Winter Diet
The month of June was all about Winter Diet, referring to the foods that are healthy and nutritious to eat during the cold season.
Not only are the following food options healthy, but did you know they can also boost your mood? Psychologist Susan Albers, PsyD, adds in her vitamin D-rich favourites, to registered Dietitian Beth Czerwony’s RD, LD, recommendations, below.
Root vegetables, such as carrots, potatoes, beets, and parsnips
Vitamin D-rich foods, such as fish, eggs, and mushrooms
Oatmeal, which is a warm and filling breakfast option
Soup, which can be made with vegetables, beans, lentils, and lean protein
Mood-boosting snacks, such as dark chocolate, nuts, and seeds
Immune-boosting choices, such as citrus fruits, garlic, ginger, and turmeric
Winter squash, such as butternut, acorn, and spaghetti squash
Hearty leafy greens, such as kale, chard, and collards
“Vitamin D-rich foods are the number one food item to consider adding to your menu during the winter months. People who have more emotional eating during the winter are shown to have lower levels of vitamin D, which is associated with more anxiety and depression,” Dr. Albers explains.
Our recommendation for this month is A Cafe Etc. in Brighton. One of Jetty Road's earliest cafes designed in a retro (1920's) style with a sensational theme of Marilyn Monroe.
